Coral Gables Congregational Church announces summer lineup

By David Fleshler

A series of classical and jazz performances at the historic Coral Gables Congregational Church will help relieve the seasonal South Florida drought of live music.

The Spanish-revival church, listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, has announced its 24th Summer Concert Series, running from June 4 through Aug. 13, with a combination of vocal and instrumental concerts.

The classical performers are the following:

-The violinist Anne Akiko Meyers (above), a highly regarded performer who just released her latest recording Smile, appearing June 18 in works of Beethoven, Debussy, Part, Schnittke and others.

-The guitarist Sharon Isbin, a Grammy winner who on July 16 will play works of Leo Brouwer, Granados, Albeniz and others.

The jazz performers include the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Sextet, performing June 4; singer Tony DeSare, July 2; the Eldar Djangirov Trio, July 30; and the trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, Aug. 13.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, with discounts for purchases of the series. The church is at 3010 DeSoto Blvd., across from the Biltmore Hotel. Call 305-448-7421, ext. 33, or go to www.communityartsprogram.org.
