Fresh off an acclaimed Coral Gables recital, local soprano Nadine Sierra will make her Florida Grand Opera debut this January as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto.

Robert Heuer, general director of the Miami company, made the announcement Friday morning in a comment posted to a review of her recital on South Florida Classical Review.

“Nadine is an artist whose career I have followed for several years,” he wrote.  “Her recital last Saturday was wonderful on every level, and convinced me that we should invite her to sing with Florida Grand Opera.”

Heuer added that Rachele Gilmore, who was scheduled to sing the role of the doomed Gilda, had been released from her contract to allow her to sing at La Scala. That opened up the prime role for the Fort Lauderdale-born Sierra.

“I was happy to be able to have a role to offer to Nadine so quickly,” wrote Heuer. “I look forward to sharing this beautiful artist with our South Florida audiences.”

Florida Grand Opera’s season opens Nov. 12 with Torroba’s zarzuela, Luisa Fernanda. fgo.org; 800-741-1010.
