Domingo to sing “Luisa Fernanda” for one FGO gala performance

By Lawrence A. Johnson

Placido Domingo will sing one performance of Florida Grand Opera’s season-opening production of Luisa Fernanda as part of a lavish gala fund-raising evening.

The celebrated Spanish tenor will perform the leading role of Vidal Hernando at the second performance Nov. 15 at the Ziff Ballet Opera House. (The production opens on Nov. 12.)

“We are honored to welcome such a legendary artist as Plácido Domingo, who has transcended the classical music world to become a household name,” said FGO CEO and general director Robert Heuer in a released statement. “There is no better star to commemorate Florida Grand Opera’s first zarzuela production.”

The FGO production of Moreno Torroba’s popular 1932 zarzuela was also presented in Madrid and at Washington National Opera where Domingo also performed the role.

Tickets to the gala performance of Luisa Fernanda are $65-$500 and will go on sale to FGO subscribers Sept. 19 and to the general public on Oct. 17.

Reservations for the “full Zarzuela Gala Evening” which includes the Luisa Fernanda performance with Domingo, three receptions, and a stage dinner dance begin at $1,500 per person.  Tables for the full evening range from $15,000 to $100,000. Reservations are currently available only to Lyric Society donors of $1,500 and above.
