In a busy music weekend that includes the Cleveland Orchestra’s “Fate and Freedom” festival, Florida Grand Opera’s opening of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and the finals of the Chopin Competition, the University of Miami Frost Opera Theater’s Puccini double bill should not be overlooked. Under Alan Johnson’s direction, Frost productions have been consistently high-caliber musically and imaginatively staged.

Starting Thursday night Johnson conducts students from the vocal department in two of the operas from Puccini’s “Il Trittico”—the comedy Gianni Schicchi and the tragic melodrama Suor Angelica.

Frost Opera Theater presents Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica 7: 30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at UM Gusman Concert Hall. music.miami.edu; 305-284-2400.
