Leonard Slatkin

The great American conductor Leonard Slatkin brought the Saint Louis Symphony to the first rank of American orchestras and helped rebuild the Detroit Symphony after a crippling strike.

Now, at 72, Slatkin is beginning to scale back his commitments but remains active. He will appear Sunday at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach to lead the Orchestre National de Lyon, where he is serving his final season as music director.

Joining him for the Barber Violin Concerto will be Gil Shaham, whose frequent South Florida performances are usually highlights of the season. The concert will include a work called Celephaïs by one of France’s leading contemporary composers, Guillaume Connesson, inspired by a story of a fantasy city by the American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. The orchestra played the work’s U.S. premiere last Sunday at Carnegie Hall. Also on the program is Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
