Every season, members of the New World Symphony compete for the honor of performing a concerto with the orchestra. The results invariably yield one of the most entertaining concerts of the year, with committed, technically proficient performances of unusual works that shame the stale programming that most touring professional orchestras routinely bring to South Florida.

On this season’s lineup, just one of the works, the Barber Violin Concerto, is heard with any frequency. As for the rest, when was the last time you heard a concerto for harp or bassoon?

This weekend’s soloists are Chloe Tula performing the Glière Harp Concerto, Ansel Norris in the Hummel Trumpet Concerto, Darren Hicks playing the Weber Bassoon Concerto; and Emerson Millar in the Barber Violin Concerto. Leading the performances will be guest conductor Edwin Outwater.

Concerts are 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at New World Center in Miami Beach. nws.edu; 305-673-3331.
