Gustav Mahler

Michael Tilson Thomas‘s revelatory performances of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler with the New World Symphony have been highlights of recent seasons. This weekend Tilson Thomas turns to Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). Mahler considered the score a symphony for voices and orchestra. The six-movement cycles comprises songs about drinking, nostalgia, lost love and death. The vocal soloists are mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke who has become a noted Mahler interpreter, and heldentenor Simon O’Neil, who has sung leading roles at the Met and the Bayreuth Festival.

Mahler’s work will be preceded by avant-garde icon John Cage’s 1947 score for modern dance choreographer Merce Cunnigham’s The Seasons. Cage’s music will be accompanied by a video conceived by Tilson Thomas and designed by Clyde Scott.

The New World Symphony plays works by Cage and Mahler 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the New World Center in Miami Beach. nws.edu; 305-673-3331. There will be a wallcast of the Saturday performance.
