Voigt pulls out; FGO swaps Verdi’s “Ballo” for “Sweeney Todd”

Soprano Deborah Voigt has cancelled her performances in Florida Grand Opera’s production of Sweeney Todd next season. The soprano was recently appointed as a full-time voice teacher at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Without its star in the show, the company has decided to pull Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical off the 2016-17 schedule. It will be replaced with Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) for the final opera of the FGO season.

“We are disappointed she can’t join us but we congratulate Ms. Voigt on her appointment to the faculty at San Francisco Conservatory,” said FGO executive director Susan Danis Wednesday. “We do know our audience loves Verdi and we look forward to presenting Un ballo in maschera in May 2017.”

Florida Grand Opera opens its 76th season with Bizet’s Carmen on November 12, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin on January 17 and Jorge Martin’s Before Night Falls March 18.
