Frost School musicians highlighted on new CD

By David Fleshler

A new recording on the Naxos label showcases the musicians of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, with a portion of the revenue going toward university scholarships.

The latest entry in the Naxos Wind Band Classics series features the Frost Wind Ensemble in David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 3 and Thomas Sleeper’s Trumpet Concerto. Sleeper is director of orchestral activities at Frost.

Conducting is Gary Green, chairman of the school’s department of instrumental performance. Performing the trumpet part is Craig Morris, former principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and now professor of trumpet at Frost.

The Wind Band Classics series features such prominent ensembles as the Winds of the London Symphony Orchestra and the United States Marine Band. But it has also spotlighted several university bands, helping to market them through alumni associations. For each recording sold through Naxos Direct (www.naxosdirect.com), the company contributes one dollar to the scholarship fund of the university’s choice.
