Michael Tilson Thomas excels in romantic music. This weekend, the New World Symphony’s artistic director conducts an all-Russian program featuring Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, one of the final large-scale, richly orchestrated works from the twilight of Russian romanticism. Violin virtuoso Gil Shaham is soloist in Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a score replete with the composer’s brand of spiky, bittersweet lyricism. At Saturday’s concert, Tchaikovsky’s March solennelle will be added to the program.
Friday’s performance at the New World Center in Miami Beach is sold out but tickets are available for the 8 p.m. Saturday repeat at the Arsht Center in Miami. 305-673-3331; nws.edu.
