Rachele Gilmore

A rising star of the opera world will sing the role of Amina in Florida Grand Opera’s production  of Bellini’s La Sonnambula, which opens 7 p.m. Saturday at the Arsht Center in Miami.

Rachele Gilmore, who gained renown for her memorable last-minute fill-in at the Metropolitan Opera in Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann, will bring her vocal virtuosity to the elaborate coloratura of Bellini’s heroine.

The 1831 opera’s plot—involving sleepwalking, jealousy and a visiting count—is even more unbelievable than that of most operas. But it provides the framework for great music for soprano, tenor and bass, with lots of melody and drama, in addition to the vocal fireworks.

Directing the opera is the renowned retired soprano Renata Scotto, a part-time Miami resident, who gained a boost early in her career by filling in as Amina for Maria Callas.
