Marek Janowski

In his first performances with the New World Symphony since 1997, Marek Janowski returns this weekend to conduct the final concerts of the orchestral academy’s 25th anniversary season. During multiple appearances in the 1990’s, the Berlin-based conductor led blazing accounts of scores by Schubert, Smetana and Richard Strauss.

Strauss’s music dominates this weekend’s programs as well. Don Juan and the Burleske for piano and orchestra with Orion Weiss as soloist are featured Friday at the New World Center and Saturday at the Arsht Center. The waltz-infused Suite from Der Rosenkavalier completes the all-Strauss bill on Friday while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is the crowd-pleasing finale at the downtown concert Saturday.

Marek Janowski conducts the New World Symphony 8 p.m. Friday at the New World Center in Miami Beach and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Arsht Center in Miami. There will be a wallcast of Friday night’s concert. 305-673-3331; nws.edu.
