A new classical ensemble specializing in contemporary music makes its debut this weekend in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, attempting to establish an outpost for new music among the district’s galleries, restaurants and performing-arts spaces.

Nu Deco Ensemble will hold its first concert Saturday night at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, with works by young American composers, an arrangement of music by the French electronic duo Daft Punk and a collaborative performance with the Miami electronic duo Afrobeta.

The 20-member, Miami-based ensemble just won a $75,000 grant from the Knight Foundation. It was founded by Sam Hyken, principal trumpeter of the Miami Symphony and a former fellow of the New World Symphony and Jacomo Rafael Bairos, conductor of the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra in Texas.

Among the composers who will be heard on the first concert are Adam Schoenberg, Chris Rogerson, Paul Dooley and Andy Akiho. Future concerts will take place at The Light Box, as well as other venues such as New World Center and the North Beach Band Shell.
