In an unexpected and positive announcement after a financially challenging season, Florida Grand Opera said Friday that it will close its 2015 fiscal year in the black, avoiding a deficit for the first time since 2010.

Though ticket sales were disappointing, Susan T. Danis, FGO’s general director and CEO, said that balancing the books was possible due to an increase in financial support by donors and keeping an even tighter line on expenses.

“This feat was accomplished through the work of so many,” said Danis Friday. “Although we had hoped for stronger ticket sales, all of the departments did an excellent job of cost containment and, as always, FGO’s loyal donors went above and beyond.”

Danis said that many hundreds of donors had made new gifts or substantially increased their previous donations to the company through its expanded fundraising efforts, including its “Say Yes to Opera!” initiative.

The company ended the last two fiscal years with deficits of $1,918,822 and $2,041,490, in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Danis said complete financial details and specific numbers for FGO’s 2015 fiscal year would be released later this summer.

FGO opens its 2015-16 season with Rossini’s The Barber of Seville November 9. fgo.org; 800-741-1010.

What a feat! This is a wonderful accomplishment. Although so many are to be thanked, we are so fortunate to have Susan Danis at the helm. Kudos!
