Less than three hours before the event, the Miami Summer Music Festival announced that Deborah Voigt has pulled out of Saturday night’s much-publicized opening concert of the Miami Summer Music Festival due to  illness. She also will not participate in the master class and book signing scheduled for Sunday.

A festival spokesperson said that Voigt informed the festival Saturday morning that she had a stomach flu and would not be able to perform tonight’s concert.

The concert will go as scheduled with the programmed Mahler Symphony No. 5 and young festival singers taking Voigt’s place on the first half. Among the young artists are Betsy Diaz, Todd Barnhill, Clayton Mathews, Rebecca Henriques, Megan Barrera and Allison Lonstein.

The festival released a statement from Voigt promising to appear at the festival next summer and congratulating Miami soprano Betsy Diaz who is among the young artists replacing her.

“As soon as next season’s dates are arranged I will plan to make up for this visit,” said Voigt in the released statement.

“I am thrilled that you will have the opportunity to hear Betsy Diaz sing this evening. I have worked with her and feel very confident that you will be experiencing the artistry of one of America’s up and coming singers! As we say in the opera biz, toi, toi, toi, Betsy!”
