New World Symphony launches streaming series

By Lawrence A. Johnson

The New World Symphony’s season—like that of every classical organization across the country—ended early and abruptly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting quarantine.

But the Miami Beach orchestral academy is now filling the gap with NWS Archive+. The new web-based series offers streaming of past New World concerts, along with artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas moderating discussions about the featured musical works with NWS fellows, alumni, guest artists and visiting faculty.

The hour-long series launched last month with Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 (“Rhenish”) with MTT joined by hornist Sarah Willis of the Berlin Philharmonic and NWS horn fellows Roy Femenella and Corbin Castro. Subsequent performances have focused on Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Berlioz’s Romeo et Juliette and music of John Cage.
